Geometry- vocabulary, coordinate graphing, classification of shapes
Every day your child will need the following supplies for math class:
My Math Workbook (provided)
Agenda (provided)
Math Journal (composition book)
Pencils
Dry erase markers
**Please be sure to replenish your child’s supplies as needed**
Multiplication Facts
We
will begin the year with timed multiplication tests. Each student will begin on 2's and work
their way up through 12's. After
mastering all the facts, there will be an A, B, and C test with all the facts
mixed. Students will have two minutes to
complete 36 problems, and must achieve 100% accuracy to pass on to the next
test. These tests will be part of your
child’s first quarter math grade.
Homework
Homework will be assigned each night Monday through Thursday, except for test days. Homework will be worth four points; three selected problems will be graded and one point will be for completion. No points will be given if work is not shown. Late homework will be accepted the following day only, for a maximum of two points.
Homework Help
If you ever get stuck and need help while working with your child on math homework, you have a few options:
Look back a few pages in the workbook to the lesson examples and guided practice problems.
Check out connected.mcgraw-hill.com (log-in info. will be sent home)
Write me a note letting me know the issue and I will make sure I check in with your child the next day and get him/her on the right track.
Quizzes
& Tests
Tests
will be given at the end of each chapter, with quizzes given throughout. Quizzes will be mainly computation, whereas
tests will be a mixture of computation and word problems. If your child is not happy with a test grade,
he/she will have the option of completing a take-home retest. Your child may use any resource available to
complete the retest (book, notes, internet, family member), and it will be due
two schools days after it was sent home.
Your child’s final score will be an average of the original test and
retest. No retakes will be given for
quizzes.

How can you help your child?
Set a consistent time for homework to be completed. Whether it’s right after school, after dinner, or an hour before bedtime, students need a structured time set aside for homework. When there is a structured
time, students are less likely to “forget” that they had homework.
Provide a quiet, calm place for your child to complete homework. This area should be free from distractions (television, siblings, conversations) so your child can get the most from homework time.
Never do the homework for your child.
Homework is a way for me to assess each child’s skill level and is used to guide my lesson for the next day.
Encourage your child to be as independent with homework as possible. If he/she asks for help, first have them look back at the lesson examples and guided practice problems. If they are still stuck, guide him/her in the right direction without giving the answer.
Regularly check your child’s grades on Progress Book. I update grades daily, so be sure to check often for current grades and announcements.
Practice multiplication facts with your child each night. Even 10 minutes a night will help with multiplication fact fluency. Knowing basic multiplication facts will make all the other topics that much easier.
Stay in contact. If you ever have a question or concern, please do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected]
I’m looking forward to a successful fifth grade year with you and your child!
