Middle School Students Celebrate Black History Month

The Licking Heights Middle School National Junior Honor Society has planned a variety of activities to celebrate Black History Month this February. Members of the NJHS want the entire student body to get involved through engaging announcements and creative contests.

NJHS member Chloe Campbell is excited about the upcoming activities and believes that students need to be more aware of black achievement throughout American History. “I feel that every black hero went through a period of adversity,” Campbell said. “I want students to see how adversity can turn into excellence, and that it is something to celebrate.”

This year there will be two schoolwide contests. The first is the Black History Month Poster Contest. Seventh and 8th grade students are invited to individually submit a poster that illustrates an African-American that embodies the theme of ACHIEVEMENT. Posters can be any size and must illustrate the theme, include a caption and demonstrate artistic flair. Deadline to enter the contest is February 10.

The second contest is the Black History Month Door Decorating Contest. Individual classrooms will be invited to decorate their doors based on the theme BLACK CONTRIBUTIONS TO AMERICAN LIFE AND HISTORY. The doors will be judged on the following elements: Visual Impact, Craftsmanship, Completeness, Originality and Use of Theme. Doors are slated to be judged on February 24.

The month will also feature morning announcements on well-known and not so well-known African-Americans. There will be a weekly trivia contest as well, where students have a chance to win prizes. Winners of contests will be announced at the end of the month.
