Pupil Services Director Wins Outstanding Public School Employee Award
The Licking Heights Board of Education is honored to announce that Mitch Tom, Director of Pupil Services, is a 2024 Exemplary School Employee award winner.

The Exemplary School Employee Award is an annual award from the Ohio School Boards Association (OSBA) and recognizes employees who are critical to the success of a district and committed to improving the lives of students, families, staff members, and the surrounding community.

“Mr. Tom is a committed problem solver. He goes to the root of issues affecting students and families, and alleviates inequities that prevent students from achieving at the highest level,” says Dr. Kevin S. Miller, Superintendent of Licking Heights Local Schools. “He works with vulnerable and at-risk students and families and firmly believes in the dignity of each individual.”

Tom was recognized at the OSBA Central Region Fall Conference on Sept. 18, 2024 at Tolles Career Center. In his nomination, his colleagues particularly highlighted his work to open the Licking Memorial Health Center at Licking Heights, a Minute Clinic-style point-of-care open to the community at Licking Heights High School. Tom’s leadership of the district’s English Language Learner program was also recognized.

Now in his 17th year with Licking Heights, Tom started his career in education working with students with special needs and multiple disabilities. As Director of Pupil Services, he manages whole-child supports for students and families and oversees all departments pertaining to these services.

Tom primarily works with district demographics like homeless students, students in the foster care system, New Americans, students living in poverty, students dealing with mental and emotional disturbance, and students experiencing significant trauma in their home lives

“Those who work with Mr. Tom know that he is a genuine believer in equity, providing each student–regardless of background–with the resources they need for a productive education and high quality of life,” Dr. Miller says. “Mr. Tom demonstrates what it means to work hard for the greater good of an organization–and for others.”
