This course is designed to help students expand their understanding of the English language. English as a Second Language, ESL, instruction focuses on four key areas: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. For speaking, we encourage the students to be vocal in class with reading out loud, answer questions, grammar practice, and whole group discussions. To strengthen listening skills, students listen to others speak for phonemic understanding and for the introduction of new vocabulary. For reading skills, the students are exposed to novels, short stories, and articles all at their present English reading level. Students will practice writing skills in sentence building, using proper grammar and sentence structure, eventually building up to paragraphs. ESL instruction can also be referred to as English Language Learners, ELL, or TESOL, Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.
Reading Strategies is a course designed to improve reading comprehension and fluency for students who read significantly below grade level. The course follows the Common Core standards for reading and will include explicit instruction of strategies to read and comprehend literature and informational texts.
