HS Band Opportunities:
 
Wind Ensemble
 
This is an advanced placement concert band; students are selected to participate following an audition process in the Spring. The group is primarily juniors and seniors. Students are exposed to a wide variety of music, musical concepts and tools. The development of each student’s playing skill on his or her specific instrument is stressed. Some after-school performances are required. Activities include various concerts, solo and ensemble contests, and festival performances. PREREQUISITE: Based on audition results.
 
Symphonic Band
 
This course is designed to continue developing fundamentals in instrumentalists. Students must have been in band previously. The group is primarily freshmen and sophomores. Students are exposed to a wide variety of music, musical concepts and tools. The development of each student’s playing skill on his or her specific instrument is stressed. Some after-school performances are required. Activities include various concerts, solo and ensemble contests, and festival performances.PREREQUISITE: Based on readiness and instrumentation
 
Percussion Class
 
This course is new for the 2015/2016 School Year. It will count for students' Fine Arts Credit. It is an entry level band course, open to any and all students; no previous experience needed. The course will cover the beginnings of percussion. 
 
Marching Band
 
This is a ‘co-curricular’ activity. Students must enroll in either the Wind Ensemble or Symphonic Band to participate. Students will learn a variety of music, and prepare in numerous community performances (parades, football games and competitions). Rehearsals begin in the summer and continue through the fall. Students receive PE credit for participation. PREREQUISITE: Based on readiness and instrumentation, prior band participation.

Color Guard

An aspect of the marching band, the color guard contributes the color and visual element to the marching band. Clinics begin in April/May with auditions in late May. ALL students are welcome to audition. No previous music participation is required. Students receive PE credit for participation. PREREQUISITE: Audition results.

Jazz Band

Beginning the 2015/2016 school year, Jazz Band will now be offered after school during Spring semester. Topics covered will include improvising jazz solos, jazz writing theory, listening to and imitating recordings of jazz artists in order to improve style, and general development of appreciation of the jazz music form.
PREREQUISITE: Must be in the Wind Ensemble or Symphonic Band

Meg Beavers, a native of Hilliard, OH and graduate of The Ohio State University, has been Director of Bands at Licking Heights Local Schools since 2013. Prior to her position at Licking Heights, she spent four years as Director of Bands at Fort Recovery Local Schools. Ms. Beavers' teaching responsibilities include the Licking Heights High School Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Jazz Band, Marching Band, Pep Band, Musical Pit Orchestra and Assistant Licking Heights Central Middle School.
