Frequently Asked Questions for 24-25 Redistricting

How were the new boundary lines for the elementary schools determined?
The determination of new boundary lines involved a thorough analysis of demographic trends, projected population growth, and the current and future capacities of our schools, as well as significant input from the community. This process was guided by the goal of ensuring all students have access to the best possible educational environment, with efforts to minimize disruption, maintain neighborhood cohesion, and provide stability for families.

When will the new elementary school open?
A brand new Licking Heights elementary school, Lima Ridge, is set to welcome students in mid-October 2024. Until then, students designated for this new school will commence their academic year at the old North Elementary School building and transition to the new facility upon its opening. Recognizing the challenges that transitions can pose, we are committed to implementing a carefully considered plan to support students and families during this period, ensuring a smooth and supportive move to the new school environment.

Where can I find a map of the new district lines?
An interactive map detailing the new district lines is available on the district's official website. This tool allows families to enter their address to see how the changes may affect their school assignment, ensuring transparency and ease of access for all community members. There is also a video that demonstrates how to operate this website here.

How will the new boundary lines affect my child's school assignment?
The adjustment to boundary lines means some students will attend different schools starting next fall. Nearly two-thirds of our students will attend the school closest to their home and there will be no splitting of neighborhoods between schools, two priorities strongly emphasized in community feedback.

Can my child finish their elementary education at the school they are currently attending instead of moving to a new school?
We understand the importance of consistency and community in your child's education journey. With the new redistricting plan, students are required to attend the school building to which they have been assigned. This approach helps us ensure equitable access to resources and opportunities for all students within our district. However, we recognize that each student's needs are unique. If your child requires specialized programming not available at the assigned school, accommodations can be made to support their educational path.

If my child is changing schools, what support will be available to help them transition?
Recognizing the importance of a smooth transition, the district will be releasing a comprehensive support plan that includes orientation sessions, school tours, and meet-and-greet events with new teachers and classmates. Additionally, counseling services will be available to address any concerns or anxieties children may have about changing schools, ensuring they feel welcomed and supported in their new learning environment.

What criteria were used to decide on staff relocations to different schools?
Staff relocations were decided based on a blend of factors, including individual preferences, the strategic needs of each school, and the goal of placing educators in positions where they can have the greatest impact. Throughout this process, we have strived to match skills and interests with the needs of our students while also considering the professional development and career aspirations of our staff.

Will transportation services be adjusted to accommodate the new school boundaries?
Yes, in alignment with the new school boundaries, our transportation department actively contributed to the planning process, ensuring that bus routes are efficient and effective. The district's transportation routes will be comprehensively reviewed and adjusted as necessary. Updates on these adjustments will be communicated well in advance of the new school year, allowing families to prepare accordingly.

How does the redistricting plan accommodate for future growth within the community?
Our redistricting plan was crafted with an eye toward the future, embracing the exciting growth of our community and proactively staying ahead of it. As we witness our community expanding, this plan ensures our schools can comfortably accommodate new students without compromising on the quality of education.

What opportunities will there be for parents and staff to provide feedback or ask further questions about these changes?
We are committed to maintaining open lines of communication. We encourage feedback from our community. Opportunities for dialogue include scheduled coffee meetings, direct consultations with school principals, and dedicated channels on our website for submitting questions or concerns. We believe that ongoing engagement and transparency are key to navigating these changes successfully and building a stronger, more united school community.
