How is ELL Proficiency Assessed?
OELPS: Students in grades K-12, are assessed for English language proficiency using the Ohio English Language Proficiency Screener (OELPS). The OELPS is the state-provided, standardized tool for determining whether students qualify as English learners eligible to participate in the school’s language instruction educational program.
OELPA: ALL EL students take the Ohio English Language Proficiency Assessment (OELPA) in: Listening, Reading, Speaking, and Writing. This test is administered in early Spring and results are available to schools in May.
ALT-OELPA: Some students may qualify for the Alt-OELPA which offers English learners with the most significant cognitive disabilities a way to demonstrate their English language proficiency on an assessment based on alternate proficiency expectations for English language development.
