Jhuma Acharya, Family Engagement and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Specialist
Jhuma Acharya brings a wealth of experience and a passion for advocacy to his role as a Family Engagement and DEI Specialist. Originally from Bhutan, Jhuma spent nearly two decades living in a refugee camp in Nepal before making a home in Columbus in 2012. With over 15 years of teaching experience in Nepal and a Master of Social Work degree from The Ohio State University, Jhuma has dedicated his career to serving diverse refugee and immigrant communities. His extensive background in education and social work uniquely positions him to understand and address the needs of underserved populations. He is currently pursuing a PhD in school social work at OSU.
As a former Reception and Placement Program Case Manager at Community Refugee and Immigration Services (CRIS), Jhuma advocated for equity and empowerment of refugees and New Americans at the local, state, and national levels. He also served as a board member and is the current board chair of the Bhutanese Community of Central Ohio.
Jhuma's research interests lie in school-family engagement for English Language Learners and addressing achievement gaps among ELL students. He is dedicated to mentoring refugee and immigrant youths, helping them explore their potential and integrate into their new communities while maintaining and celebrating their culture and heritage.
Outside of work, Jhuma remains actively involved in volunteering with various refugee and immigrant communities, exemplifying his commitment to making a difference in the lives of others. His blend of personal experience, academic knowledge, and community involvement makes him a valuable asset in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in education and beyond.
