LLI is a program that builds thinking skills, word strategies, and provides students with a solid foundation for reading. We work on these skills with specific books at particular levels. Then, students can utilize what they have learned in Book Club with the books they are reading in their classroom. In 1st Grade, the LLI program begins with ten Getting Started lessons. These lessons familiarize the students with the components of the program and teach the students the daily schedule of activities.
Students then (2nd Graders too) begin at/near their instructional level in the program. The program alternates books each day. One day we will read a book at their instructional level. The next day, we will write about that book and read a book at their independent level. The program alternates between the two levels to build the students confidence and practice fluency.
The lesson sequence looks like this for 1st Grade Green Kit:
Lessons 1-10 are Getting Started Lessons Levels A-D
Lesson 11-20 are level A books
Lesson 21-30 alternate between Level B and A books
Lesson 31-40 alternate between Level C and A books
Lesson 41-50 alternate between Level D and B books
Lesson 51-60 alternate between Level E and C books
And so on..
