In this unit students will:
- Review basic atomic structure and bonding
- Lewis dot structures/Bohr models
- Ionic vs. covalent bonding
- Identify/describe the properties of water and explain how they facilitate life on Earth
- Describe the structure and function(s) of the four major biological macromolecules
- Carbohydrates
- Lipids
- Nucleic acids
- Proteins
- Model and explain the reactions (endergonic and exergonic) that build and tear down the four biological macromolecules
- Explain how enzymes effect chemical reactions and predict the impact of environmental factors on their activity
- Calculate and compare enzymatic rates of reaction
- Design a full-length inquiry lab to explore factors that impact enzymatic activity
- Create a research poster that effectively communicates scientific findings
