Diabetes is when a person’s body cannot make insulin, or the insulin their body makes is unable to work properly. Insulin is made in the pancreas and is a critical element in the body needed to function properly by converting food into energy. Diabetes can affect each individual differently. It is important to put a 504 or care plan in place for the student to accommodate them while in school.
Please provide the written orders to the school clinic from your child’s doctor. Students must provide supplies, snacks, lunches, and all medications needed to provide for them while in school.
Promoting independence is important for children as they learn to manage their conditions. If your student is aware of how to count carbohydrates, draw up insulin, or administer insulin, let the clinic know. This can be added into their care plan to help keep the child on track both while in school and at home.
